Patient death sparks controversy at SSKM hospital over bed unavailability

A 65-year-old patient, Akalima Bibi, passed away outside SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, raising concerns over bed unavailability.

Akalima, referred from a Howrah hospital, arrived at SSKM's emergency department with breathing difficulties at 8.30 pm. Despite a cardiology department referral, alleging admission was warranted, the family claimed no beds were found.

Subsequently, Akalima was referred to National Medical, but with no available beds there either, she was brought back to SSKM in the morning.

The family asserts that SSKM's emergency department advised them to wait outdoors, insisting there was no need for admission, leading to the patient's demise shortly after leaving the outdoor area.
